One River. One Journey.

In 2025, I joined my friend Trey Reaves as he set out to kayak the length of the Tennessee River—a journey of more than 650 miles. Working with Tennessee RiverLine, I documented the expedition through video and photography while also serving as part of Trey’s support crew.

Each day brought a new stretch of river, new logistical challenges, and a new story to tell. My job was to capture the journey as it happened and turn those moments into daily content that allowed people to follow along from the road.

Daily Stories from the River

Rather than waiting until the expedition was over to tell the story, content was produced throughout the journey. Each day I captured video and photography, edited material from the road, and created social content that allowed the audience to experience the expedition while it was still happening.

Production+Crew

More than documentation

My role wasn’t limited to documenting the expedition. I was also part of Trey’s support crew, which meant production decisions often had to coexist with the practical needs of moving someone hundreds of miles down a river.

Some moments called for a camera. Others called for putting the camera down and helping solve whatever problem was in front of us.

The Rhythm of the Expedition

One Day at a Time

Over more than 650 miles of the Tennessee River, each day followed the same rhythm: plan the day, move into position, meet Trey on the river, capture the journey, support him as crew, edit, and share the story before doing it all again.

PLAN → MOVE → MEET → CAPTURE → CREW → EDIT → SHARE → REPEAT

Every day required balancing logistics and storytelling—figuring out where Trey would be, getting into position, capturing the journey, supporting the expedition, producing the day’s content, and preparing to do it again farther downriver.

The Human Story

An expedition like this is measured in miles, but the story exists in everything that happens between them—the early starts, long stretches alone on the water, changing weather, unexpected problems, brief stops on shore, and the decision to keep moving toward the next destination.

Those were the moments I was most interested in documenting.

Bare feet propped in a vehicle window beside a sock drying on the side mirror
Family gathered on the grass at a riverside stop, with a man in a camp chair and a young child nearby

My Role

I worked simultaneously as storyteller and crew member throughout the expedition, documenting Trey’s journey while helping support the logistics required to keep it moving. I handled video, photography, daily editing and social content while continually adapting to changing locations, schedules, conditions, and the needs of the expedition.
