Telling the story of trail running.
I joined Aravaipa Running as its first dedicated creative/video producer, helping build a more consistent visual identity around its races, athletes, and growing trail-running community.
Working across approximately 24 endurance events each year, I planned, filmed, and edited content in environments that ranged from desert races and mountain trails to finish lines, aid stations, and remote locations. Over time, that work expanded beyond traditional event coverage into original programming and entertainment through Mountain Outpost.

2017 Black Canyon Ultras Golden Ticket film, presented by Altra Running. Produced by Michael Carson / Steep Life Media.
Stories from the Trail
Every race had its own character. The goal wasn’t simply to document who crossed the finish line, but to capture the landscapes, personalities, struggles, unexpected moments, and community that made each event different.
Races covered included the Black Canyon Ultras, Javelina Jundred, Mogollon Monster 100, Crown King Scramble and Across The Years, with athletes such as Courtney Dauwalter and Clare Gallagher on camera.

Mountain Outpost
Taking trail running a little less seriously.
The work eventually expanded beyond traditional race coverage into Mountain Outpost, creating original programming built around the personalities, humor, news, and culture of the trail-running community.
Partner work included How NOT To Pace A Runner! (2017), produced by Steep Life Media with Western States 100.
Mountain Outhouse News
A weekly trail-running news show combining race results, community stories, humor, and an intentionally unconventional approach to endurance-sports media. I produced 164 consecutive weekly episodes without missing a scheduled weekly release.
MTN OUTHOUSE NEWS – Ultra Liar Jane Benfer episode (2018), one of 164 weekly news episodes.
Drop Bag & Challenges
An original comedy series built around one of ultrarunning’s most familiar pieces of equipment: the drop bag.

Live Production
My work with Aravaipa has continued through live race production, operating multi-camera livestreams where the story has to be built in real time. I operate the video switcher, manage multiple camera feeds, coordinate camera operators, integrate audio and graphics, troubleshoot problems as they happen, and make live editorial decisions about what the audience sees.
